If you have been looking for an Atlanta based swimming lessons instructor, you are in the right place.
If you already know how to swim and want to get better, or do not know how to swim at all, you are also in the right place.
I am a swimming lessons instructor for adults and children in the Atlanta area.
Here’s the deal:
Swimming, or floating I should say, is something our bodies do naturally.
It’s only when we ‘tense’ up that our bodies sink like a rock in the water.
What I teach you is how to relax in the water, let your body float naturally, and use your arms and legs to propel you.
Sounds easy enough right? Think you are ready to get started?
Who Is Bret And Why Should You Care?
Over the past decade I’ve successfully taught children and adults of all ages how to swim. Whether they were absolute beginners, already treading water, or experienced swimmers.
I started as a lifeguard for county pools in the Atlanta area. During my training, our instructors coached us on proper swimming technique not only for our benefit in regard to saving someone.
This new skill set allowed us as lifeguards to teach swimming lessons as an extra job opportunity.
Since then, I have worked as a lifeguard and instructor for other swimming companies, as well have taught private swimming lessons annually.
How Does It Work?
We always start with an assessment of your current swimming ability. From there my goal is to get you comfortable in the water, get you floating, and then work on different swimming strokes.
After floating, swimming technique is the most important part of swimming lessons. Poor swimming technique causes you to use more energy than is necessary, which means you’ll tire faster.
Many people think of swimming in a sense that they are ‘working’ to stay on top of the water. This is not the case. As I mentioned already, your body is going to float on it’s own if you give it a chance.
Think of swimming as just the act of moving your floating body around in and on the water.
If you are constantly fighting to stay on top of the water, you are going to burn up your energy and have a hard time swimming long distances. A relaxed body goes a long way in the water with minimal energy usage.
Let’s get you swimming better.

Swimming Strokes Adults and Children
The main swimming strokes that we work on in our lessons are:
- Freestyle Stroke
- Back Stroke
- Breast Stroke
- Butterfly
Freestyle
Freestyle swimming is the most traditional stroke, also called the ‘crawl’. In a freestyle swimming stroke, you are on your stomach, face down in the water, using your arms and legs to pull and push your way across the water.
For this to be the most effective, you’ll need to learn to keep your body aligned straight(as if you were standing up straight) with your eyes and head facing directly downward.
To breath, you simply roll your body to the side, grab some air, and roll back in so that you are facing straight down.
You want your hands to enter the water just above your head, and your legs to be kicking just below the top of the water.
Back Stroke
The back stroke is basically the opposite of freestyle. When swimming back stroke, you lay on top of the water as if it were a bed.
With your legs kicking in the same fashion as the freestyle stroke, you reach above your head one arm at a time, and pull the water down to where your pockets would be.
Staying relaxed and keeping a steady breathing rhythm is key to swimming a successful back stroke.
Breast Stroke
Once mastered, this is one of the easiest strokes as far as energy use while swimming. One strong breast stroke can glide you far across the top of the water.
The trick is to get your timing down for the two steps.
Pull and Breath, Kick and Push.
Starting with your body completely extended, arms out straight, body facing downward, you Pull your arms backward, while Pulling your body up and your face out of the water. At the same time, you should be bringing your knees up toward your mid section.
After your take your breath, you need to Kick your legs out and together, while Pushing your arms forward.
Butterfly
The butterfly is one of the most physically and mentally taxing strokes, and certainly one of the most fun once done properly.
Using both arms at the same time, you propel yourself forward. At the same time you use both your legs together as one in what they call the dolphin kick.
This stroke requires a good technique, as well as strong shoulders and arms.
